Trust is challenged and confidence in individuals and institutions across all parts of society crumbles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9e99720 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9e99720\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>So, the statement by European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra at a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/multimedia.europarl.europa.eu\/en\/webstreaming\/fisc-committee-meeting_20250206-1000-COMMITTEE-FISC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00bb31; font-weight: bold;\">European Parliament Subcommittee meeting <strong>\u2192<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on Fiscal Matters that \u201c&#8230;, vaping kills\u201d\u00a0clearly disregards facts that show the reduced harm of new nicotine products vs traditional combustible tobacco. It deliberately disregards the body of scientific evidence for ideological reasons and ultimately confuses consumers who may be seeking less harmful alternatives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90c16fb elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"90c16fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Misleading statements on alternative nicotine products: a dangerous trend<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-259c59f elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"259c59f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This isn\u2019t an isolated incident. Similar comments made by Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi during his <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.europa.eu\/european-commission\/en\/varhelyi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00bb31; font-weight: bold;\">confirmation hearing \u2192<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span> in November 2024 further underline a worrying trend: the conflation of combustible tobacco with scientifically distinct alternatives like heated tobacco, nicotine pouches or vapor products.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">At JTI<\/span>, we believe this kind of narrative <span lang=\"EN-US\">confuses consumers<\/span>, threatens informed policymaking and ultimately stifles innovation. It\u2019s time for a debate grounded in evidence \u2013 not ideology.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cea55ec elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"cea55ec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-274f7f4 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"274f7f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Transparency and inclusion<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f75bbd elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1f75bbd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The ongoing review of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) presents a pivotal moment for the EU to embrace a science-driven approach to tobacco harm reduction. The forthcoming evaluation report must incorporate comprehensive evidence on the relative risks of different nicotine products. Official statements equating all nicotine products lack scientific credibility and risk misleading both policymakers and the public. Moreover, it creates a restrictive environment that discourages R&amp;D investments toward novel products.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>We therefore urge the Commission to prioritize facts over rhetoric, to take stock of the full body of scientific evidence and to engage transparently with all stakeholders. We are committed to contributing constructively, with integrity and openness.
